Spain finds scoring boost
Digest more
It was another day of the World Cup ’s biggest stars getting on the scoresheet as Mohamed Salah and Lamine Yamal opened their accounts, while Uruguay against Cape Verde was a contender for the best game of the tournament so far.
Lamine Yamal, making his World Cup debut, scored the opening goal vs Saudi Arabia, becoming the second-youngest player to achieve this feat, emulating Pele.
Lamine Yamal has been included in the top ten youngest footballers to score goals in World Cups, the FIFA website reported. In the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, the star winger of reigning European champions Spain and Spanish La Liga titleholders Barcelona scored against Saudi Arabia at the age of 18 years and 343 days.
Lamine Yamal scored his first FIFA World Cup goal in Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Spain rebounded from a draw against Cape Verde with a dominant display, featuring a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal.
According to Opta, Yamal is only the second player aged 18 or younger to score the opening goal for his country in a World Cup match. The other was Pele, who was 17 when he scored
